Songs In The Key of Heartbreak was a great read! It has a universal message that transcends across all sexual orientation in regards wanting to be loved. JD the main character, is character that is very sure of himself but experiences self doubt at times and goes against his will in order to find true love. It is captivating love story with highs and lows that will keep you wanting more!
Songs in the Key of Heartbreak is a wonderful first attempt for the author! The characters are well developed. The imagery puts the reader right there. The story flows nicely and leaves the reader wanting to know what happens next. It has something for everyone, comedy, drama, suspense, intrigue and of course romance. If you are a fan of E. Lynn Harris, you will be a fan of this young writer. I look forward to his next effort.
I purchased this book in support of a new and upcoming author. I was completely blown away by how intrigued I was with the subject matter (I am female and heterosexual). This book is an awesome read! It kept me hooked and anxiously awaiting the next chapter. I could not put it down and read the entire thing in one day! Mr. Butler makes the reader identify with the main character (J.D.) so well. In each situation, you can't help but to reminisce or go back to that, "I remember when" moment. Regardless of sexual orientation, we have all been there. Songs in the Key of Heartbreak will take you on a roller coaster ride of memories. I can't wait for the next installation to see where the writer takes our beloved J.D.
This book was truly one that I could not put down. Mr. Butler managed to tell a story that is universal, regardless of your sexual preference. The main character is not unlike most of us who have fallen in love with Mr. Wrong while Mr. Right was there all along. I dowloaded the book to my e-reader on Friday and was done with the book on Saturday night. Mr. Butler is a great writer and a great story teller. In "Songs in the Key of Heartbreak" he managed to tell a story of love, heartbreak, forgiveness, and truth. His ability to connect various songs to specific aspects of his lead characters life was innovative and fun. I found myself singing some of the songs mentioned in the book. Mr. Butler's "Song in the Key of Heartbreak" connected with me and I'm sure it will connect with you as well. A must read!
I stand in line to place my order at Panda Express, while reading this book, (Chapter 7 to be exact)not realizing that I was next to be served. I was tapped on the shoulder by an elderly woman from behind as she states, "Baby, y'all youngins' and these cell phones, I tell ya'!" I politely turned 180 degrees and kindly proclaimed, "I'm actually reading a book, ma'am." As her eyes widened, I returned to my initial stance and placed my order Rice Bowl with Sweet Fire Chicken Breast. My intention was to get my food to go and return to the office. However, I decided to sit down, eat, and read for about 20 minutes. I was surprised when I looked up and realized I had been at lunch for one hour and twenty-minutes. I jumped up in a rush and panic to return to the office. Rewind I received the book in the mail the day before. (autographed by the author which was a great personal touch, thanks)I looked at the clock and it was 520pm. I immediately opened the package and began to read because of the review from a previous reader. Needless to say, I was on Chapter 5 by 700pm. The only reason I put the book down for that evening was because I had to cook dinner and start on homework. I called a colleague of mine who read the book and we shared the emotional commonalities of parts of the book laughter, sorrow, hopefulness, excitement, suspense, anger, and happiness. "Songs in the Key of Heartbreak," is nothing less than an amazing read filled with truth, honesty, love, hurt, pain, and other examples of what we ALL encounter when we are in love; or at least think we found it. It is a book I have passed on to a dear friend; a read I have tweeted about; and one I will indeed share with my Book Club members. No matter your background, no matter your age, no matter your preference, "Songs in the Key of Heartbreak," allows the story of JD to be that "voice" of what we all have experienced or know someone who has. I look forward to the hopeful sequel. I look forward to meeting the author. I look forward to rereading the book (a few times). And, I look forward to it hitting the big screen. I was at the edge of my seat… or bed reading this. I thought I would do a little bit of reading before going to bed and I ended up reading the whole book in one night- with the many twists and turns and truth bombs this book provided I couldn’t put it down. This book transcends age, time, race, and sexual preference. I was able to relate to this on many levels – there were many passages that I needed to hear/read in order to continue my journey of self-love, finding my truth and (hoping) love. David’s style of using of casual writing makes you feel as if you are reading JD’s journal or having a conversation with him or even watching the entire thing play out. I also love how David incorporated the “soundtrack of JD’s life” (creates Spotify playlist)
I purchased this book with an open mind- determined to finish it before I developed an opinion. I was pleasantly surprised. The story drew me in- I finished this book in one day. I can't wait for the sequel, and maybe even a short film.
